Red Sea Crisis: Disruption of Shipping Business

The six weeks of security breach in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden area has continued to take its toll on the shipping business and international supply chains that rely on the important channel.

There does not seem to be any let-up on the part of the aggressors. Recent attempts at military action aimed at neutralising the rebels’ firepower has not had the intended effect. For this reason main ocean carriers are still giving the area a wide berth (pun not intended) with the Cape of Good Hope route still the only available practical option between western Europe and East African coast, notwithstanding the almost 3-week additional transit time that comes with that routing.
