Restructuring of IEBC

About the ‘Cherera Four’ and the whole IEBC restructuring issue, and just so that we put this matter into context, it is worth of note that qualifications of the commission’s chairman must be, by law, equivalent to those of a Supreme Court judge.
It then follows that, with Chebukati having served his six-year term, none of the current commissioners qualifies to be IEBC chairman.
Therefore, with or without the ‘Cherera Four’ on board, the new IEBC chairman will be appointed from outside the current team of commissioners.

As a matter of fact, the commission is set to have a whole new team of commissioners, since, even the other two ‘old’ commissioners, Messrs Guliye and Molu, have also served their term and will be leaving with Chebukati in early 2023.

Who becomes the next IEBC chairman and commissioner(s) is the genesis of the simmering political standoff, of course with eyes set on the 2027 general elections.

Be guided accordingly.
